My ‘Black Windows’ series, from the mid 1980’s were sculpted oil paintings that reflected scenes of the burnt-out South Bronx. I witnessed these scenes first hand when I delivered mail in Mott Haven during the summers of 1974 and ’75, and whenever I took the #4 train downtown, surveying vast swaths of crumbling and smoldering buildings. I created ‘The Capitol’, the largest (56” x 136”) and most ambitious of this series, in 1989. Its inspiration came from the engraving of the Capitol on the back of the $50 bill, but I set that iconic structure in a burnt-out Bronx-like setting. This painting feels more relevant and prophetic today, than it did 35 years ago.
