The elevated trains figure prominently in the look and character of the Bronx, as well as in the psyche of its inhabitants. Since I was a child I’ve been fascinated, disturbed, and inspired by these massive iron-trellised structures which snake their way through the streets, casting such an extraordinary matrix of ever-shifting shadows. The El, a series of windbreaks created in inch-thick faceted glass, depicts how Bronx life under and around these elevated trains is so greatly influenced by their presence.
