This exhibition, opening on May 1st from 5-9 pm at the Kingsbridge Historical Society in the Bronx, will include 22 paintings, several of which are monumental in scale, constructed of numerous panels, and created over a span of years. The largest is Reflecting on the Familiar, a 21-foot painting which began as a ‘self-portrait with view of Riverdale’ from Hauben’s terrace in Kingsbridge. The painting grew to 7 panels and was exhibited for six months at the Bronx Museum. Since then, Hauben has added three more large, arced panels that comprise the sky. The entire 10-panel painting will be on view for the first time in public during this exhibition.

Bronx Vortex, a 16-foot, 5-panel painting that depicts the juncture of Fordham Road and the Grand Concourse, will also be on view. This painting captures the vibrancy, density, and unique street life of this iconic shopping district in the heart of the north Bronx.

Emergence, the 9-foot centerpiece painting of the exhibition was born during Covid-19 (when traveling ceased). Hauben describes it as a “6-year odyssey into the realm of my imagination.” It is a distinct departure from the cityscapes he is best known for.

On Sunday May 24th at 11 am, visitors to the exhibition will have the opportunity to view a time-lapse video that condenses the creation of Emergence into 20 minutes, followed by a gallery talk by the artist.

On June 21st, the Kingsbridge Historical Society will be hosting a fundraising event at the exhibition. Proceeds will help to renovate the historic Edgehill Church building (where the exhibition takes place) at 2570 Independence Avenue in Riverdale, NY. All are welcome to attend. At the event, Hauben will be selling museum-quality prints of his paintings (as well as the paintings themselves), and the organization From The Bronx will be offering a wide variety of Bronx-themed merchandise for sale. Copies of the poster for the exhibition will also be available.
